BOOK A TUTOR
Hi! My name is Zoë Cooper. This spring I graduated from The Bronx High School of Science, and I will be starting at Harvard University in the fall of 2021. I am interested in the STEM subjects, especially chemistry, physics, and math. I'm passionate about using science and math to have an impact in either the field of medicine or the environment - and during high school I completed research with an environmental engineer. Outside of academics, I love running (I ran track and cross country in high school), cooking, and spending time with friends.
Hey everyone, my name is Z! I am a sophomore at NYU, and I love science and math. I am thinking about double majoring in biology and psychology, while minoring in chemistry. I've been tutoring students for 5 years, and worked at a professional tutoring center for 2 of those years. My experience with tutoring is mostly with high school math and science. However, I have had students from elementary/middle school and have experience working with them as well! I love working with kids and spend my summers volunteering at a camp for kids with cancer. I know these are tough times and things aren't the way they used to be, but I hope that by working together and connecting in new ways (Zoom background discussions!) we can all make it through. Can't wait to meet everyone and do my best to help in any way that I can.
Hi! My name is Yea Won Lee, and I am a sophomore at Rice University. I plan to double major in Cognitive Science and Philosophy with a minor in Politics, Law, and Social Thought. In the past, I have tutored kids at a variety of levels (elementary school, middle school, and high school). My previous areas of instruction have been in math, biology, and history, but I have experience in many other subject areas as well! I can also help edit papers, go over homework/exams/projects, and guide you through the college and scholarship application process. I applied to several scholarships as a senior in high school and was awarded a full scholarship to Rice University through the Questbridge Match. Outside of academics, I have a passion for activism and volunteer work!
Hi! My name is Tiffany and I look forward to meeting you! I am a graduate of LaGuardia Arts High School and I am an incoming freshman at Fordham University. I am really passionate about art - especially editing and photography. I love tutoring younger kids and helping them work through their struggles in school. So feel free to ask me anything, even if it is just to talk! Some of my hobbies are playing games, shopping, editing, and reading manga. I hope we get to know each other soon!
My name is Tayahna and I am an avid lover of life, simply put. As a multi-hyphenate creative entrepreneur, I've taken a keen interest in building my artistic skillset by teaching myself music production, DJing, and several instruments. This journey began around the age of 6, and I have been consistently cultivating my talents ever since, as well as developing life skills such as leadership, discipline, authenticity, and open-mindedness. I also am deeply passionate in education and inspiring others through mediums that speak to them, as I believe knowledge is one of the most valuable things life has to offer. I am a recent graduate of LaGuardia High School and I will be attending SUNY Purchase.
Hello, I’m Taskin. I recently graduated Midwood High School, and I will be attending Hunter College to major in Adolescent Education. I started out volunteering as a Bengali tutor at a non-profit organization that aimed to teach young people how to read and write in Bengali. Later I worked for SHETU NYC helping seniors in the Kensington area of Brooklyn learn English (ESOL) and learn about the citizenship process. Currently I am a certified Health Educator for SUNY Downstate’s AEP called Teens Helping Each Other. I am passionate about teaching and look forward to helping people learn.
Hi! I'm Tansina, or Sina for short, and I recently turned 18! I graduated from The Bronx High School of Science, and will be attending Baruch College. As a full-fledged adult, I realized I'd gathered up enough caretaking experience from raising my younger siblings to write down 10 years of work on my resume. Aside from the eldest sibling duties, I decided to take on teaching kids of all ages as a challenge at my local library. It was there that I decided I want to create my own stories and invent worlds that people would want to escape to, so I started publishing my own webcomic. Drawing and writing took over my life and finally gave me a pathway that was once an uncertain future. I know what it's like to not have the same opportunities as some of my peers may have, but just one push was all I needed to start my own journey doing something I love. I hope to do the same for those that need that extra little push.
Hi, I’m Talia! I recently graduated from LaGuardia High School and am taking a gap year before attending the University of Chicago in Fall of 2021. I’m most interested in History (I am currently a paid intern at the NY Historical Society), English, and Mathematics. I am also passionate about classical music: I was a vocal major at LaGuardia and continue to study opera. As a Filling the Gap tutor, I’m comfortable working with students of all ages. I have experience tutoring at the Star Learning Center, where I worked with a seventh grader in all school subjects and a second grader on reading and writing. My older student and I focused mainly on essay writing, exam prep, and weekly homework assignments. I also worked as a CIT at a children’s summer camp, engaging with and caring for young campers. I’m so excited to work with Filling the Gap this year and hope that I can help NYC’s students succeed in these hard times!
Hi, I’m Sylvana! I am a recent graduate of Bard High School Early College Manhattan and will be attending Williams College. I was born and raised in Greenwich Village, NY. I love world history and philosophy, and have spent the last four years leading my school’s debate team and political advocacy group, YPPG. I have worked the past two summers as a mentor for my high school’s 9th grade immersion program, where I provided academic tutoring and taught Social-Emotional Learning in advisory. When I’m not registering voters or leading advisory over zoom, I love to hang out and watch Love Island with my wiener dog, Wilbur.
Hi! My name is Sophia and I am currently a student at the College of Staten Island double majoring in English 7-12 Education and Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies. My dream job is to be a teacher and provide students with a comfortable space to encourage learning and growth and provide them with critical thinking skills that can be applied in all aspects of a student's life, not just in a classroom. I have interned with the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust - as a lead tour guide as well as an assistant tour guide at the Children's Museum of the Arts. I love creative forms of art! Dancing, writing, sketching, and painting are some of my chosen forms of creative expression that I am passionate about. I also am a reader, and my favourite genre of literature is young adult fiction.
Hi, I’m Skylar! I am 18 years old and I live in NYC. I went to The Anderson School for elementary and middle school and just graduated from LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts as a drama major. Last summer, I worked at CampedUp, a day camp for kids ages 3-12 who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I enjoy working with children with special needs and am a volunteer with Shireinu Special Needs Religious Services, which helps kids celebrate holidays and traditions in a fun and accommodating environment. I have been a CIT at French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts, where I created music videos with children using American Sign Language. I have experience tutoring in Math, English, and Science and love to teach these subjects. I also have 8+ years of drama training and would be happy to work on audition preparation, as well. I know how important it is to make learning fun and I am excited to connect with parents and students to help make the learning experience enjoyable and personal during this unprecedented time.
Hi, My name is Shirly Hernandez. I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, but I have been living in the Bronx since I was 10 years old. I have always had a passion for everything STEM, and writing, so I have focused my attention to those things. I attended a STEM orientated high school in which I tutored a lot of my classmates every year. In my last year, I had the opportunity to become a TA for AP Calculus AB, so I would say that Math is my strongest suit. I graduated from Manhattan Bridges High School, and I attended SUNY Oswego with a double major in Adolescent Education, and Mathematics. I am now transferring to Hunter College to, hopefully, pursue the same thing. Apart from school, I love journaling, whether that be regular journalling or bullet journaling.
Hi, I’m Sarah and I’m currently a sophomore premed student at the University of Michigan studying neurobiology. I’m currently working on becoming an EMT and I speak Spanish and am learning Hebrew. As the eldest of 4 children, I’ve always worked with kids younger than me and in high school I helped teach coding to middle schoolers and was a TA for middle school math. A fun fact about me is that I’ve danced my entire life at ABT, Martha Graham, and NYU Tisch.

I have also tutored students from grades 1 through 4 at Sylvan Heights Charter School in Harrisburg, PA when I worked as an office assistant. For both experiences, I helped the children with whatever homework they had at the time. Some things that I am passionate about include basketball, getting active, dancing, and anything music related. I am also passionate about getting more students excited for the seemingly overwhelming STEM subjects.

This summer I have been making earrings out of clay and learning how to sew, which has been lots of fun. I also love sailing and swimming, and pretty much all water related activities. As my school's choir board president, leader and arranger of our a cappella group and resident music director for our student run theatre organization, I've developed the ability to lead by connecting with others, finding a balance between work and play when there's a task to be accomplished. Additionally, having produced 2 musicals in festivals and independent venues, I've become good at working under pressure and making the most of whatever resources are made available. My name is Janey, I'm a senior at Sarah Lawrence College, and I am passionate about helping each child I instruct achieve their goals and sharpen their strengths! I have over 7 years of combined camp and tutoring experience, from traditional day camp, to academic coaching, to summer school. Though my degree focus has pivoted to Planning and Community Development, I initially began my undergrad in Child Development. I follow a child first approach: centering their needs, strengths, and desires in all aspects of instruction. Regardless of ability, class, or educational experience, my goal is to help each child grasp difficult concepts, reinforce their strong suits, and most importantly, have fun! Especially with my younger students, play is a central aspect of my philosophy. When a student is struggling with a homework assignment, play can be used to reinforce topics and bring abstract ideas into the real world. I am open to working as a homework assistant to supplement a child's school experience, tutoring in particular need based areas, or instructing small groups in a pod environment.
I'm Jade! I'm a creative writer and climate organizer in the city. I am currently on a gap year before attending Harvard College next fall. I have tutored rising eighth-graders for both the ELA and Math sections of the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) on a one-on-one basis. But my most rewarding experience is leading my high school's entirely student-run Local Outreach Tutoring program for disadvantaged seventh- and eighth-graders to prepare for the SHSAT. In addition to helping plan the trajectory of the program, I taught ELA to large classes and small groups of students, starting as enrichment before turning to rigorous test preparation. I dedicated two years of my high school career to this program, in which time it expanded to 50 students from a dozen local middle schools.

Hi! My name is Emma Neuman (she/they) and I graduated LaGuardia in 2019. At LaG I was a technical theatre major and I mostly worked in stage management but I really liked making props as well. I am a student at Oberlin College in Ohio but I have decided to take this year off because of covid concerns. Hi! My name is Emma Burns and I'm from Brooklyn. I recently graduated from the Professional Performing Arts School where I majored in Drama and I'm now a freshman at the University of Vermont. My favorite and best school subjects have always been English, History, and the Social Sciences. I want to work professionally in the film industry as an actor, director, producer, and maybe even as a writer. I love to spend my free time reading, listening to music, watching movies/TV, making collages, and since COVID-19, going on really long walks.
Hi! My name is Ellie Feighery and I grew up on the Upper West Side of New York City. I have been dancing since I was three years old and have spent time at many different studios in the city. After attending PS 199 and MS 245 The Computer School, I began my first year of high school at LaGuardia as a dance major. I was then accepted into the Pre-Professional Division at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. I moved to Pittsburgh and, for the remainder of my high school years, I lived in a dorm house and transferred into an online high school program. I love any chance to choreograph regardless of age group or technical level. In addition to dancing, I have also supplemented most of my dance career with teaching younger students. Online education made my dance career possible. I graduated with honors from Connections Academy in 2020. This gave me lots of experience with remote learning, and fed my passion for science and English.
Hi! My name is Daisy Melanie Villalva. I'm a rising junior at Binghamton University. I'm majoring in Sociology with a minor in Immigration Studies. My experience with children goes far back starting at the age of 15 working in camps and volunteering during after school clubs. Aside from my experience with children of all ages in my community. I first experienced teaching a year ago in Honduras teaching English to 9th graders. That was my first experience being in the front of the class, lesson planning, and learning new communication skills. Education is something I value a lot and the importance of it, but not everyone is able to have a “good education” experience either abroad or even locally. Growing up in a low-income household, attending low funded schools I have seen first hand how many students attending these schools miss out on some of the best opportunities. They are not exceeding at high rates which aren't based on knowledge but the lack of resources and support they receive. As a sociology major learning about how society functions and those in it, education is an important factor and it starts with supporting those who are the next generation.

At the age of 7, I started playing the violin and I took lessons from then until now. After attending LaGuardia, I have found a passion in music education, and I began teaching students from ages 5-12 for about three years. Soon, I will be attending Boston University as a music education and violin performance major, and I am so excited to be able to have some more teaching experience!
